I teach Astanga Vinyasa Yoga, in the Mysore tradition of Sri T Krishnamacharya, and Vinyasa Flow Yoga based on 'classical' Astanga in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. I teach both the Primary and Intermediate Series in regular classes and private tuition in London and on international retreats. I also choreograph vinyasa sequences suited to individual client needs. Yoga philosophy is integrated with breath and asana to reveal the spiritual path underlying the practice, and the technology to stabilise the mind and realise our true nature. It works on a deep physical and psychological level. I aim to inspire, challenge and exhilarate all levels of yoga practitioners. I'm a believer in the ancient yogic path to self-realisation.
I began practicing Hatha Yoga in 1986. In the past decade, my interest turned to Astanga Vinyasa Yoga and i've studied with Sri K Pattabi Jois and many of his senior students including John Scott, David Swenson, Matthew Sweeney and Rolf Naujokat. Nancy Gilgoff was my first astanga teacher and I've attended many of her 'Adjustment Clinics' to learn how to safely assist people in the Primary and Intermediate Series. I completed a Teacher Training certification with Richard Freeman (2004), and more recently studied the traditional Krishnamacharya method of asana, pranayama & kundalini metaphysics with Sri BNS Iyengar at the Patanajala Yoga Shala in Mysore (2009). On the Vinyasa Flow side of yoga, I completed the Tripsichore Yoga Theatre Teacher Training with Edward Clark (2002). David Life and Sharon Gannon (Jivamukti Studios) are also inspirational people and teachers.
I'm interested in shamanic healing techniques and the Tantric path. I've studied the Tibetan Nyingma Buddhist path and completed a 10-day silent Vipassana meditation retreat in Myanmar (Burma) in 2006. I'm a certified member of Yoga Alliance (USA) 500 R.Y.T.
The yoga shala overlooks the ocean. Each day will begin with a led Astanga Vinyasa Yoga Primary Series class. (Mysore self-practice is also an alternative.) An afternoon class will focus on different aspects of asana, pranayama and meditation. We'll study the inner and outer techniques of vinyasa that tie the poses together in a ‘moving meditation'; develop the ‘inner limbs' of yoga to develop focus and concentration skills that enhance clarity of mind; use the breath to feel safe enough to move through difficult poses and work honestly at your edge; shift energy in problem areas (hips & shoulders); restorative yoga; learn use yoga as a healing/transformational tool to move through fear and release hardness in the body; experience deep inner peace and insight; learn to be at ease in the present moment. Develop a daily practice so inspiring you'll want to get on your mat as soon as you get home. Be a yogi for life!
This workshop will inspire and challenge all levels of yoga student. In the past, participants have ranged in age from 19 - 57. Beginners are welcome as long as you have some yoga experience, are relatively fit and willing to try.
(There will be ample time for exploring nature, swimming, relaxation and massage.)
